song lyrics that speak to me

22 November, 2019

These are just a few of my favorite lyrics from some of my favorite songs. I have a ton of lists on my phone including captions, quotes, and lyrics. There are also a million songs that have amazing lyrics that I haven't listed but nevertheless mean a lot to me.

What makes a song lyric special is either the way that the lyric is sung or the thoughtful word choice. There are songs that have terrible lyrics but still sound amazing because of the way that they sound, and on the other hand there are songs that center around the lyrics and are a type of poetry. I've noticed that I am really a person that is drawn to words and I have to notice what is being said in order to enjoy what is otherwise supposed to be just music, and when I find something really great I have to keep it my pocket or post it on my blog. Enjoy.

the less you're seen, the less you are
- phantom power and ludicrous speed | pierce the veil

I think about this lyric out of context a lot and for me, it feels like a lot of the time that if you don't receive validation for the things that you do it's almost like you never really did them. It's a bit like saying: if a tree falls down in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? If you get dressed up or create art or write and no one ever reads it or hears it or see it, did you really do anything? I try to think that if something is meaningful to me then that means it has meaning regardless of how other people think. And being visible is only as important as you want it to be.

I want everyone to know,
that I am half a soul,
- taxi cab | twenty one pilots

This song is one of my favorite Twenty One Pilots songs because I think it paints such a vivid picture and story. The main verses create a real feeling that is so hard to explain but so strong in a weird way.

I'm the kind of human wreckage that you love.
- blood | my chemical romance

Like the interludes on Paramore's self titled album, I really like how short and to the point this song is. It talks about giving everything to people and it never being enough and this lyric stands out the most to me. I think it's about feeling like you are a terrible human being and not wanting people to love you in spite of that. It's about wanting people to recognize your flaws and accept them or reject but not just pretend that they don't exist because they are a part

honey, if you stay, I'll be forgiving. nothing you can say can stop me going home.
- famous last words | my chemical romance

Something about "honey if you stay, I'll be forgiving" seems like such a real line from a conversation that actually happened. With little context it already feels like a story has been told in 7 lines and I love that it carries that weight.

I wrapped my arms around the moment, like I'm clutching a memory,
you alive in your madness, in love with the night.
- the bluest things on earth | the wonder years

This is my favorite Wonder Years song because I feel like it also tells a really vivid story and this pre-chorus line is absolute poetry. I love the idea of someone being alive in their madness, in love with the night. Even though the song has a sad meaning, it mentions parts of life that make a person who they are despite all the things that society will throw at us, there are pieces that stay.

you call me up again just to break me like a promise,
so casually cruel in the name of being honest,
I'm a crumpled up piece of paper lying here,
cause I remember it all, all, all too well.
- all too well | taylor swift

I love that this is one of Taylor's longest song and that it goes through the ups and downs of an entire relationship in that length of time. She is practically yelling this bridge and it really shows how memories can hurt you all over again.

and the salt in my wounds isn't burning anymore than it used to,
it's not that I don't feel the pain, it's just I'm not afraid of hurting anymore.
and the blood in these veins, isn't pumping any less than it ever has,
and that's the hope I have, the only thing I know that's keeping me alive
- last hope | paramore

I pretty much always have this verse going through my mind because it is so poetic and concise and real. It's about learning to move forward even though you know you will get hurt again but being okay with that, it's about growing and I love that.

I know it might be a little selfish of me to say,
but I need to know if you've thought of me at all today.
- taken by sleep | tyler joseph

Early Twenty One Pilots songs written by Tyler Joseph really make me want to become a song writer. The songs are constructed in such an interesting and unique way which is why people always say they defy genre, but the lyrics have also always been very emotional and honest since the beginning. Songs like fall away and blasphemy are so haunting because every line is has meaning and every word seems like its carefully chosen that makes me so drawn to it.

you made my heart an open wound,
and I loved you for it.
- the best day ever | my chemical romance

This lyric is a little graphic and little dramatic, but (surprise) I like that it tells a story. Keeping people in your life that hurt you or pretending like they are good for you is something a lot of people deal with and here it is described in one sentence.

hello angel, tell me where are you? tell me where we go from here.
- skyline and turnstiles | my chemical romance

A lot of my favorite lyrics are from My Chemical Romance and this one is from the first song they wrote together. It talks about feeling lost and looking to anyone for answers in such a confusing world. Being unsure is something that never really ends and it describes a universal feeling of not knowing were to go.

I don't know what it is that they want, but I haven't got it to give.
- if you were there, beware | arctic monkeys

This line is at the very end of the song and it is so mysterious and intriguing . .  . I . .  love it.

I light all my candles, cut flowers for all my rooms,
I care for myself the way I used to care about you. //
Bet you wanna rip my heart out, bet you wanna skip my calls now,
well guess what? I like that.
- hard feelings/loveless | Lorde

These lyrics are separate but apart of the same song and I've mentioned this before but the entire Melodrama album is amazing. Hard Feelings talks about getting over somebody and learning to be yourself again, but then loveless is a step past that and there is humor in the end of this song that makes it so good.

A lot of these lyrics are taken out of context which could either make them very interesting or very confusing and I appreciate both of that. I might make a part 2 to this because there are so many amazing songs in the world that I can't stop thinking about.

Give some of these a listen and please comment your favorite song lyrics below!
